Saying "hi" to the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum and a fire to sip cocktails by.

Sometimes I am so overwhelmed by this new city of mine, there is just so much to discover, do, explore, that I wonder how I will ever fit it all in. And yet sometimes, especially lately with bitter cold and gray days, I feel like there is nothing to do at all. Moving to Philadelphia after college and now to New York has taught me that the best way to explore and get to know a city, for me, is to just get out and walk. Although this can prove a little easier said than done, especially in the winter. Even so, I’m slowly starting to tackle this gigantic city and little by little am making it my own. Here are some pictures from recent explorations, if you’d like to see.

Japanese treats at Minamoto Kitchoan and cookies from The City Bakery (there are still a couple days left in February's daily hot chocolate specials at the bakery, go try some, they're delicious)

The boy and I took a afternoon trip to the Terrain in Connecticut, such a lovely store, though not quite as magical as the one near Philadelphia.

Oscars 2013

Did you watch the Oscars last night? I thought Seth Macfarlane did a good job, and although being widely inappropriate at time (but kinda in a good way), was pretty funny, and who knew he could sing that well? My favorite red carpet look of the night was Jessica Chastain, by leaps and bounds, she just looks so “old Hollywood” and glamorous. And can we talk about Jennifer Lawrence for a second? I think she is just the cutest.

Living Room Inspiration

Lately I’ve been itching to change up the apartment decor a little, and my biggest focus right now is the living room / media center. I’ve been using the same one in our last three apartments, you can sort of see it here, and since it is from Ikea, I feel like it has gotten plenty of use and don’t feel guilty about an upgrade. Deciding that it was time for a change turned out to be the easy part, because as I started looking through all my favorite living room inspiration files, I realized that none of them showed TV’s. I mean, I understand that they may not be the most design-friendly object, but let’s be honest, almost everyone has one. So after some digging, I’ve compiled my favorite TV solution inspirations. And while I’m still deciding which direction we’ll head, I’d love to hear, which would you pick?

Sick Day

A sick girl's breakfast: toast with walnut butter and cinnamon

Sorry for the lack of posts, I’m recovering from some sort of flu/cold thing that snuck up on me all of a sudden. Have you ever noticed how sick days just aren’t what they used to be when you were young? My mom would always rent a bunch of movies and if I had a sore throat, she’d make me tomato soup. Not quite the same situation these days. While the boy is always very sweet and takes good care of me, he was at work most of the day and unfortunately, I ever had to do some work myself.  Oh, well. I wanted to post about living rooms with TV’s for inspiration, I’m itching to change up my apartment, but that will just have to wait until tomorrow. Hope you’re all getting through the flu season with a little more luck than me!

I thought I’d share a few pictures from New York’s “snow storm” a couple weeks back, including a silly little snowman I happened upon. While snow and winter have never been my favorite, there is something to be said for how pretty this city can be after it’s been dusted in a little snow, at least before it turns to brown slush. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m more than ready for spring to start appearing.

Walnut Butter

My parents came to visit this weekend, and as always when they visit, they kept me busy exploring the city and learning new things. My mother is a big supporter of homemade nut butters, they are much cheaper and healthier to make yourself, so I decided it was time to tackle it myself. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to make and how delicious the results were, with limited ingredients and effort. We made both a walnut butter and omega-3 nut butter, but you can use pretty much whatever you’d like and just adjust to taste, just make sure to use raw, unsalted nuts. To recreate the walnut butter, use a ratio of 2/3:1/3 walnuts to cashews (cashews help the walnut butter from tasting too bitter) and blend in a high powered blender or food processor and store in a jar. So easy right? Lately I’ve been enjoying it on whole wheat toast with a little cinnamon sprinkled on top, yum.

Chocolate Caramel Tart

The boy and I had our relaxed Valentine’s Day, as planned, but low-key doesn’t mean you can’t indulge. As a special, sweet treat we whipped up a caramel tart with chocolate ganache that was as decadently delicious as it was easy to make. True, there were some corners cut, like using store bought caramel instead of making it from scratch (my favorite is here, Whole Foods sells it too) but who wants to spend all night baking when they can being eating the results instead! The store-bought caramel, combined with this easy graham cracker crust, and this ganache will certainly be popping up in the dessert rotation in the future.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Recently I’m loving Honor’s pre-fall 2012 collection, I don't care if it's a year old at this point, and would be happy to wear many of their creations to celebrate tonight; my first choice is above. Which would you wear?

Donut Plant

" />

While I may have an enormous sweet tooth, and I’ll gladly munch on just about any dessert out there, donuts have never really been my thing. That is until I tried Donut Plant this weekend. The shop, which has two NYC locations, sells jelly filled square donuts, yeast donuts, doughseeds (which are like slightly larger, filled donut holes), and cake donuts, my favorite. The carrot cake donut was to die for, and on future visits I’d love to try the crystallized ginger donut, vanilla bean and blackberry jam square donut, and the triple chocolate cake donut, don’t those all just sound amazing? If you’re in New York, pay them a visit, you’ll be happy you did.

Marta Klonowska

I’ve recently discovered the artist Marta Klonowska who makes animals out of carefully broken pieces of colored glass, aren’t they amazing? I can’t get enough of the intricate works of art that are amazingly lifelike. I’d love to see them in person someday, wouldn’t you?

I’m still trudging through this busy time of year at work, a time that leaves me feeling pretty uninspired, but even so, here are some of the little moments that have made me smile and helped me find a balance between work and real life.
