The Nutcracker

Last week the boy and I went to see New York City Ballet’s The Nutcracker, and boy was it lovely. It really lives up to its reputation of being “the” Nutcracker performance, the children were well rehearsed and in sync, the costumes were sparkly and beautiful, and the principals, oh the principals, they were wonderful, and made me dearly miss my dancing days. If you’re in New York around the holidays, go, go, go; you will love every minute of it.

Easy Appetizer


For those of you planning your own holiday parties, or bringing a plate to share to someone else’s, let me make your lives easier. This appetizer is always a big hit and is super easy to make, the perfect combination. In fact, all you really need to do is boil the tortellini and skewer them with the other ingredients (fresh mozzarella and cherry tomatoes). I drizzled the finished skewers with my favorite balsamic vinegar, but a drizzle of pesto would be equally delicious. Happy snacking!

Candy Cane Cupcakes


For a holiday spin on an old-time favourite of mine, I decided to make peppermint candy cane cupcakes. I used my go-to vegan cupcake recipe, but added a teaspoon of peppermint extract to the batter, this cream cheese frosting recipe, but used half a teaspoon of vanilla and half of peppermint extract, and topped them off with crushed candy cane pieces. The cupcakes came out just as I’d imagined with a hint of peppermint, but nothing so overwhelming that you felt like you’d just popped a breath mint.

5 Minutes


My love for colored ceilings has been well documented, and boy oh boy is this one a beauty. Add that lovely claw foot tub and those stunning tile floors and I’m a goner. If I had 5 minutes today to spend however my heart desired, I would turn on the Christmas carols, open this book that I’ve been meaning to finish, light some candles, poor myself a glass of this, fill that tub with bubbles and soak. Ahhh.

Gliding Along


To take advantage of the mini heat wave we’ve been having, the boy and I took to the great outdoors and went ice skating. Although I took lessons as a little girl, I never got truly comfortable on the ice and have always been a bit fearful of the whole thing, but the boy held my hand the entire time, as promised, and we had a really nice time. For those you don’t know, from late October through early March Bryant Park builds the only free-admission rink in the city; skate rentals are $14, but if you have your own, you can skate for free. So if you’re considering skating in the city, it’s well worth your time, wallet, and sanity battling the crowds to head to Bryant Park instead of Rockefeller. Who knows, we may just make this a yearly tradition now that I’m not quite as fearful.

How To: Line Envelopes


I love, love, love sending and receiving Christmas cards. It’s a lovely way to spread holiday cheer and to send a little hello to loved ones. This year, the boy and I ordered our cards from minted.com, but in order to customize them a bit, we cut the edges with curved scissors and lined the envelope. While it may seem daunting, lining envelopes is really not too tricky and can easily be accomplished while watching TV or maybe a favorite holiday movie, Love Actually anyone? Below are the simple steps I used to line our Christmas cards.

1. Measure the width of the envelope, subtracting a quarter of an inch, and the height, to just below the glue line.

2. Using the measurements above make a template out of something sturdy, I used cardboard.

3. Using the template, trace whatever liner you have selected and cut it out.

4. Slide the liner into the envelope and place it in the desired location. Fold the flap over to create a crease in the liner. Then use glue or double sided tape to secure the top portion of the liner to the envelope. Easy peasy!

Mexican Radio


I first discovered Mexican Radio on a daytrip to Hudson, a lovely town for antiquing, and was happy to learn that they also have a NYC location. The food is more tex-mex than authentic, but it’s really delicious with unique combinations of flavors and ingredients. As an added bonus for my fellow vegetarians and vegans, most dishes are veggie friendly and the menu has a variety of different fillers for tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc. that are both vegetarian and vegan like seitan, caramelized plantain, vegan crema, grilled portabellas, and many more. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
