The Barnes

Girls in the Grass Arranging a Bouquet - Renoir

The Barnes Foundation recently reopened in its new location in downtown Philadelphia, and this past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting. Mr. Barnes, who amassed the impressive collection, wrote in his will that the pieces were to be kept "in exactly the places they are" so in order to move from Merion to downtown Philadelphia, there were numerous legal proceedings and significant controversy. That said, I'd previously been to the Merion location and feel that moving to Philadelphia was the right move. The new building replicates the previous galleries in size and all the paintings are placed exactly as they were previously, but the new location allows far more people to gaze upon the impressive collection, always a good thing in my opinion. The collection is valued at approximately $25 million, and is filled with art by Renoir, Monet, Degas, Matisse, and Cezanne, to name just a few, and is a spectacular impressionist collection very much worth a visit during any trip to Philadelphia.

First Year

Happy birthday, little blog. I've had fun looking back to see all that's been accomplished over the past year. We've…

...travelled quite a bit to New York, LondonVail, California

...tackled a few DIY projects like sparkly pumpkins, votive holders, and reupholstering a chair

...tasted some delicious Philly food at Parc, Lolita, Capogiro, VedgeSpread Bagelry...

We also adopted this little sweetie and learned that you can buy happiness.

What a busy year it's been!

Summer Solstice

Happy first day of summer everyone! Here's to hoping that it's a season filled with sunshine, picnics, firecrackers, kisses, beach days, road trips, friends and family, laughs, and everything else that would make your summer perfect for you. As an early celebration, my boyfriend and I went to the Philadelphia zoo. I've included some pictures below, if you'd care to look.

Lithe Method

Have you ever heard of Lithe Method? I'd had girlfriends mention it; they raved actually, but had never tried it myself. However, thanks to a rue la la coupon, I went to my first Lithe class this week. Lithe has immersion courses or 101 classes for beginners, which are intended to introduce newbies to terminology, moves, and techniques. My first 101 class kicked my butt and left me shaky and exhausted, but less sore the next day than I had expected. I like how the workout is varied - a mix of cardio, dance, cheer, band work - and high energy. Needless to say, I have every intention of trying it again.

Business Sense: Strengths and Weaknesses

image via

What's your biggest strength? Weakness? Both are such cliched interview questions, but let's be honest they come up over and over again. As a result, I think its important to prepare your perfect responses, long before an interview, that can be used again and again. For me, I flop between my compassion and ability to rise to the occasion for a strength and constantly taking on more, even if I'm already very busy, as a weakness (because let's be honest, you want that weakness to kind of be a strength too, right?). All have served me well, but I'm curious, what's your go-to response? Do tell!

Butterfly Butterfly

I snapped this pictures of my first butterfly sighting of the season in New York City, this past weekend. I've always loved butterflies for the beautiful colors, grace, and delicateness. I've spent many an afternoon in butterfly conservators, rejoicing when one lands on me, and I spent many hours as a child chasing little flickers around my yard. Recently, I added some to my bedroom, filling an empty candy jar that sits on the mantel. I think they add the perfect touch of whimsy to an otherwise ordinary display.

Village Whiskey

Village Whiskey is the gourmet burger establishment of the Jose Garces restaurant empire. It has a special place for me because my boyfriend and I went here to celebrate our first night in Philly. The menu offers really fancy burgers, as well as a veggie one, with upscale toppings like blue cheese, truffled mushrooms, and caramelized onions. Some other goodies are the pickled vegetable appetizers, we ordered turnip and kale and truffled cauliflower, which are delectable. That said, this restaurant is no secret to the Philly crowd so be prepared to wait a bit for a table, but trust me, you'll be happy you did.

Summer Salad

For a fresh, in season take on salad, one of my favorite is this fresh corn and black bean salad. It's simple, quick, and delicious and can really be made with whatever ingredients your heart desires. For mine, I used fresh corn, black beans, red pepper, avocado, and cilantro with a lime and cayenne pepper dressing, but you could easily had hot peppers, tomatoes, carrots, you name it. When you want a quick, healthy dinner that will really impress give it a try!

Biker Chic

Pants: J Crew, Shirt: Anthropologie

Well, its official, I've taken my first bike ride along the Schuylkill River bike path, and boy was it fun. With the perfect Philly weather this weekend, my boyfriend and I were inspired to finally take that ride and kept going for two hours! Now that we've started, there's no stopping us.

Scream For Ice Cream

I recently found this silly little chart on pinterest, which made me realize how indecisive I am when it comes to ice cream flavors. That's not to say I don't have favorites, in fact, I suppose I have many, but each is specifically situation based. If it's Ben and Jerry's I'm choosing chocolate chip cookie dough, although if it’s the new Ben and Jerry's Greek Yogurt (which is so, so delicious and everyone should try) then it's Raspberry Fudge Chunk. For frozen yogurt I usually just prefer plain with fresh fruit, and if it's soft serve, well, then I'd get vanilla. See what I mean, according to the chart I'm a rock, a party animal, and maybe even a narcissist. But I'm not discouraged; in fact, I'm inspired to try to create some ice cream flavors of my own this summer. Wish me luck!
