London City Guide: Accommodations

Images via airbnb

One of the first decisions for any trip is where to stay. As someone who studied hospitality, you may think I'd opt to stay in one of the ritzy hotels in London, but in fact, we rented an apartment through airbnb. While I had heard great things about the service, this was my first experience using it firsthand, and I couldn't have been happier. The site allows people to rent apartments and rooms around the world and tries to foster a feeling of community among renters and owners. Our apartment was across the river from Parliament and Big Ben and was conveniently located near three Tube stations. To me, location and cleanliness are always the most important factors when looking for lodging, and airbnb provides both. Like booking anything, if you plan to try the site, I'd recommend reading reviews and reaching out to owners before booking, just to be sure.

Of course there are also many lovely hotels in London ranging in price and service level. If you'll be in town for only a short stay, opt to stay in the central area, near the main attractions to optimize your time. But truly consider renting an apartment, I bet you'll be happy you did.
