Happiness Is

A few little things that bring me happiness:

1.    Butterfly kisses. Eskimo kisses.
2.    Kitty purrs.
3.    Sunshine and warm weather.
4.    The fresh feel and smell of the ocean.
5.    Getting cards or packages in the mail.
6.    Sparkling water. Sparkling wine.
7.    The first spoonful out of a new Fluff container.
8.    Little, unexpected surprises.
9.    Climbing into crisp, clean bed sheets.
10.  A cup of hot cocoa, with a splash of peppermint schnapps, on a cold winter's day.

I'm off to London for a long weekend, can't wait!

The Best Things

Oh, how very true. This cracked me up today, because isn't that really the truth? I mean there are so many wonderful, free things that I'm grateful for like my family, boyfriend, friends, but boy how expensive the rest of my wants are! Here's an example, this is free:

This Giambattista Valli dress is not, in fact, it's $7,735, so not even close to free:

Oh well, that's just how it goes.

Mint Water

I adore water, it's always my go-to drink of choice over soda, juice, coffee, tea, you name it; water is my thing. Lately I've been experimenting with creating different water flavors to indulge in. Lemon has always been my favorite, but lately I've made mint water which was cool and refreshing on a warm day. I also plan to make strawberry water, which I had on a business trip not too long ago and loved, this summer to add just a hint of sweet to my favorite drink. Flavored water is really easy to make, which is the best part. Just pick a flavor, add the ingredients to a pitcher of water, let it sit for a bit, and voila flavored water. What about you, do you love water or find it boring? Have you ever tried spicing it up with different flavors?

Color Splash

Pop-up book of flowers, used as a centerpiece.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a big believer in color. Lots and lots of color. That said, I'm always looking for new ways to infuse my surroundings with brights, without overwhelming or making too permanent of changes. So, as part of my spring refreshing I've been adding pops of color to make my apartment even more lovely. Here are some ways that I've been adding color.

Hunger Games

I realize that I was likely one of the last people on earth to read the Hunger Games, and that I'm way behind on this trend, but oh my god, I'm obsessed. All three books were finished in less than a week and now I'm dying to see the movie. I'll admit that I mostly like the books because of the character Peeta, who I may or may not have a huge crush on (I'm like a middle school girl), but at least I'm not alone as friends have told me they too have crushes on him. That said, I also think the theme is an important one in today's society of reality TV and the ever growing dehumanization of different people. Hopefully, the books influence young readers to find compassion and acceptance for one another, no matter where each of us if from, what we look like, or what are beliefs are. Have you read the books? What do you think?

Tea, Please

Spring is always a time for new beginnings, an opportunity to clean up, reorganize, and prioritize what's most important. In celebration of this refreshing time of year, I decided to host a tea party to introduce myself and my friends to more ladies in the Philly area. The concept was simple, every invitee was to invite a friend to the party, that way, we could all meet new people and expand our social circles. Although the party didn't turn out exactly as planned, (let's be honest, what every does?) the concept is something I'll certainly try again in the future. But since spring has yet to bring me new friends, I'm on the hunt for other new endeavors to undertake. Wish me luck!

Once again, I made these scones for the occasion (this time used gluten-free flour and they turned out just as deliciously).

Homemade lemon and poppyseed, vegan scones...too bad I forgot to add the poppyseeds!

Martha inspired tea sandwiches.

My Great Aunt's china, borrowed from my Mother. I love the delicate scalloped edges.

Frontera Grill

Chicago and amazing Mexican food may not go together perfectly in your mind, but believe me they should. Rick Bayless is an amazing chef and restauranteur and has truly mastered delicious and inspired Mexican fare. He has numerous cookbooks, cooking shows on PBS, and quite a few restaurants, and his fame is well-deserved. While on a recent business trip to Chicago I stopped into one of his restaurants, Frontera Grill, for some yummy food. I ordered guacamole, a fresh corn tamal, and a tamarind margarita to top it off. Boy was it delicious. Now I can't wait to go back!

Mimosa Bar

In between a bunch of business trips, I recently threw a little get together where I tried out a mimosa bar. The idea, which I first saw on pinterest, is easy, while still looking fancy, and allows people to make drinks just the way they'd like. As the hostess, it takes some of the pressure off, as people can easily help themselves to drinks, while still offering a variety of choices. It's really simple, just select three types of fruit (I chose strawberries, raspberries, and pineapple), three complimentary juices (orange strawberry, cranberry pomegranate, and pineapple), and a dry, sparkling wine of your choice (I chose Cupcake Prosecco). How easy is that? Overall, I was really happy with the outcome, and the mimosa bar, with different variations, will likely be popping up at many of my future parties.

Ombre Cake

This weekend I baked an ombre cake, which, if I do say so myself, turned out wonderfully. Isn't it funny how a slight twist on an original can seem so fun, different, and happy? The cake was vegan, although the icing was not, but it was perfectly delicious and just the way I was hoping it would be. Here's to fancy Sunday afternoons.
